    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Microbiology
    • Gastroenterology

    Background:

    • Ferrets can be susceptible to gastrointestinal diseases.
    • Campylobacter species are known enteric pathogens in various animal species.

    Observation:

    • A 4-month-old ferret exhibited prolonged mucus-laden, later bloody, diarrhea.
    • The ferret showed progressive anorexia and weight loss despite antibiotic treatment.
    • Colon biopsy revealed a thickened, turgid appearance.

    Findings:

    • Histological examination confirmed proliferative colitis.
    • The colitis was associated with Campylobacter sp infection.

    Implications:

    • Campylobacter infection poses a significant health risk to ferrets.
    • The zoonotic potential of Campylobacter necessitates careful handling and management.
    • This case highlights the importance of considering infectious causes in ferret colitis.
