Abstract:
Hyperkalaemia is a life-threatening medical emergency. Treatment usually requires admission to hospital. This is often inappropriate or unacceptable for patients in a hospice setting. Until recently, there was no palatable and effective non-invasive treatment for hyperkalaemia in a hospice. We present a case where oral sodium zirconium cyclosilicate was given to a hospice inpatient, was well tolerated and may have contributed to two additional weeks of good quality of life.
