Area of Science:

  • Digital Health
  • Mobile Health Technology
  • Perinatal Care

Background:

  • High global maternal and infant mortality necessitates perinatal interventions.
  • Mobile health (mHealth) technologies are increasingly used in healthcare.
  • There is a need to assess the safety and effectiveness of mHealth for maternal and infant care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and synthesize literature on the development and effectiveness of maternal and infant health applications.
  • To identify key features and processes in the development of these apps.

Main Methods:

  • Scoping review methodology adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
  • Searched health sciences databases for studies from 2000-2022.
  • Excluded apps focused solely on data tracking or targeting providers.

Main Results:

  • Synthesized data from 11 unique studies (21 articles) published between 2017-2021.
  • Maternal and infant health app field is in early development with modest evidence of effectiveness.
  • Most apps were in English; few had independent healthcare endorsement; end-user engagement varied.

Conclusions:

  • Numerous maternal and infant health apps exist, but many neglect user needs and raise privacy/safety concerns.
  • App technology holds potential for health equity and improved maternal/child outcomes.
  • Recommendations are proposed to advance the knowledge base for maternal and infant health apps.
