Summary

Endometrial aspiration (EA) provides good cellular yield for gynecologic cytology. Cell block (CB) and cytocentrifuge (CC) techniques are useful adjuncts for evaluating endometrial samples.

Background:

  • Endometrial aspiration (EA) is an economical, outpatient procedure.
  • This study evaluates EA for cellular yield, morphology, and the utility of cell block (CB) and cytocentrifuge (CC) techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To cytologically evaluate endometrial aspiration (EA) samples.
  • To assess cellular yield and morphology.
  • To determine the utility of cell block (CB) and cytocentrifuge (CC) techniques in EA.

Main Methods:

  • EA samples were divided into aliquots for conventional smear (CS), CB, and CC.
  • Hemorrhagic samples were processed for CS and CB (Papanicolaou and H&E stains).
  • Colorless samples were processed for CS and CC (Papanicolaou stain).

Main Results:

  • The yield for hemorrhagic samples was 85.7% (CS) and 90.9% (CB).
  • The yield for colorless samples was 55% (CS) and 65% (CC).
  • CB provided architectural evaluation, while CC offered a shorter turnaround time.

  • Optimizing EA with simultaneous endometrial biopsy may enhance evaluation, especially for menorrhagia.
