Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.

Summary

This study investigates Goal Management Training (GMT) for adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to improve executive functions (EFs). Findings will show if this non-pharmacological approach is effective long-term.

Background:

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition in youth.
ADHD is associated with significant impairments in executive functions (EFs).
Goal Management Training (GMT) shows promise for improving EFs in adults with ADHD.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of GMT as a cognitive remediation intervention for adolescents diagnosed with ADHD.
To compare GMT plus treatment as usual (TAU) against TAU alone in improving EFs in adolescents with ADHD.

Main Methods:

A multi-centre randomised controlled trial (RCT) involving 120 adolescents (12-18 years) with recent ADHD diagnoses.
Participants were randomized to receive group-based GMT (7 weekly sessions) plus TAU, or TAU alone.
Primary outcome: parent-reported EFs (BRIEF-2); Secondary outcomes: ADHD symptoms, social functioning, quality of life, and neuropsychological tests.

Main Results:

Conclusions:

The study will determine the efficacy of a non-pharmacological intervention for adolescent ADHD.
Long-term outcome trajectories up to 24 months post-treatment will be assessed.
