Summary

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) often involve triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries. While shortened radius length and wider DRUJ distance correlate with TFCC injury, they lack predictive value for DRF patients.

Background:

  • Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries frequently accompany distal radius fractures (DRFs).
  • Radiologic parameters often show concomitant changes in DRFs with TFCC injuries.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate the relationship between distal radial radiologic parameters and DRF with traumatic TFCC injury.
  • Determine the relevance of specific radiologic parameters in DRF patients with TFCC injuries.

Main Methods:

  • Included 172 DRF patients undergoing X-ray, CT, and MRI.
  • Analyzed radiologic parameters and classified fracture and TFCC injury types.
  • Compared parameters between TFCC injured and uninjured groups.

Main Results:

  • 54.1% of DRF patients had TFCC injuries.
  • Significant differences in radius length and DRUJ distance were found between injured and uninjured groups.
  • Shorter radius length correlated with type 1B TFCC injury, but parameters lacked predictive value.

Conclusions:

  • Type 1B TFCC injury is most common in DRF patients with concomitant TFCC injury.
  • Radius length and DRUJ distance correlate with TFCC injury but do not predict it.
  • Patients with TFCC injury tend to have a shortened radius and wider DRUJ distance.
