Colloidal precipitates

593
The high insolubility of some precipitates can result in an unfavorable relative supersaturation. This can lead to colloidal particles with a large surface-to-mass ratio, where adsorption is promoted. For instance, in the precipitation of silver chloride, silver ions are adsorbed on the surface of the colloidal particles, forming a primary layer. This layer attracts ions of opposite charge (such as nitrate ions), forming a diffuse secondary layer of adsorbed ions. This electric double layer...

Area of Science:

  • Animal Science
  • Nanotechnology in Agriculture
  • Poultry Nutrition and Health

Background:

  • Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) show promise for enhancing poultry performance but raise concerns about safety and residues.
  • Chitosan coating may mitigate AgNP aggregation and reduce silver accumulation in edible tissues.
  • Evaluating the efficacy and safety of chitosan-modified silver nanoparticles is crucial for broiler production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of chitosan-coated silver nanoconjugates (CS/Ag-NCs) on broiler growth, feed conversion, and immune response.
  • To investigate the potential of CS/Ag-NCs to prevent oxidative stress-related lesions and silver residues in broiler organs.
  • To determine the optimal dosage of CS/Ag-NCs for broiler supplementation.

Main Methods:

  • Cobb broiler chicks were orally administered distilled water, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at 0.5 and 5 ppm, or CS/Ag-NCs at 0.5 and 5 ppm weekly for 36 days.
  • Growth performance (body weight gain, feed conversion ratio), feeding/drinking behavior, antibody titers against ND and AI viruses, and histological examinations of organs were evaluated.
  • Silver content in edible organs was quantified to assess residue levels.

Main Results:

  • CS/Ag-NCs groups showed significantly improved body weight gain and feed conversion ratio compared to AgNPs and control groups.
  • Histological analysis revealed no adverse effects or lesions in organs treated with CS/Ag-NCs, unlike the 5 ppm AgNPs group.
  • CS/Ag-NCs administration led to higher antibody titers against ND and AI viruses, and reduced silver accumulation in edible tissues.

Conclusions:

  • 0.5 ppm CS/Ag-NCs is recommended for broiler farms to enhance growth performance and immune status.
  • Chitosan coating effectively reduces silver aggregation and potential toxicity in broiler organs.
  • CS/Ag-NCs offer a safe and effective alternative for improving poultry health and productivity.
