    Summary

    Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) deficiency is uncommon in infertile men. Most men with low FSH and low sperm count responded well to releasing factor tests.

    Background:

    • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) plays a crucial role in spermatogenesis.
    • Assessing FSH levels is a standard diagnostic step in male infertility evaluations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and clinical significance of isolated FSH deficiency in infertile men.
    • To evaluate the response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation in men with low FSH levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were measured in 300 men with infertility.
    • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation tests were performed on 24 men with oligozoospermia and below-average FSH.
    • Semen analysis was conducted to assess sperm parameters.

    Main Results:

    • Out of 300 infertile men, 24 had oligozoospermia and FSH levels below the normal mean.
    • All 24 men with low FSH responded to GnRH stimulation, indicating pituitary responsiveness.
    • No cases of isolated FSH deficiency were identified in this cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • Isolated FSH deficiency appears to be a rare condition in adult men presenting with infertility.
    • The pituitary gland is generally responsive to GnRH in men with low FSH and oligozoospermia.
    • Further investigation into the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis is warranted for a comprehensive understanding of male infertility.
