Summary

Women plastic surgery trainees report lower self-confidence than men, despite equal surgical skill. Confidence and skill correlate more strongly in women, suggesting targeted mentorship can improve gender parity in plastic surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Gender Studies

Background:

  • Underrepresentation of women in plastic surgery persists.
  • Investigating gender disparities in surgical confidence and skill is crucial for achieving parity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine gender-based differences in self-confidence and objective surgical ability among plastic surgery trainees.
  • To identify factors contributing to the gender gap in plastic surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Plastic surgery residents and fellows performed simulated cleft lip repairs.
  • Self-confidence was assessed via questionnaires post-simulation.
  • Surgical performance was blindly evaluated using validated assessment tools.

Main Results:

  • No significant gender differences were observed in objective surgical performance or training metrics.
  • Women trainees reported significantly lower procedural self-confidence compared to men.
  • Confidence scores correlated more strongly with objective performance in women (r=0.83) than in men (r=0.45).

Conclusions:

  • Women plastic surgery trainees exhibit lower self-confidence despite comparable surgical skills.
  • A stronger correlation between confidence and skill in women suggests a need for mentorship focused on skill-building to address the confidence gap.
  • Strategies to enhance confidence are essential for promoting gender equity in plastic surgery.
