Instructor as Subject: An Alternative to the Self-Management Project
1Department of Psychology, The Citadel, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409 USA.
Students in psychology courses can now learn behavior change theories through a new instructor-led project. This alternative to self-management projects shows similar effectiveness in behavior change and enjoyment, without increasing data falsification.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Behavioral Science
- Educational Psychology
Background:
- Traditional self-management projects in psychology courses offer benefits for behavior change.
- However, concerns exist regarding student honesty in self-monitoring and strategy implementation.
- The generalization of self-management skills to influencing others' behavior remains unevaluated.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate an alternative assignment to the traditional self-management project.
- To assess the effectiveness of an instructor-as-subject behavior change project.
- To compare this alternative project with traditional self-management projects.
Main Methods:
- Two iterations of an assignment were implemented where students applied behavior change strategies to the instructor.
- Student engagement, behavior change outcomes, and data falsification were recorded.
- A comparison was made against traditional self-management projects.
Main Results:
- Both the traditional and alternative projects were enjoyed by students.
- Both project types resulted in desired behavior change.
- Preliminary data suggest the alternative project is as effective as the self-management project.
Conclusions:
- The alternative instructor-as-subject project is a viable option for teaching behavior change theories.
- It appears equally effective as self-management projects in achieving behavior change.
- No significant differences in data falsification were observed between the two project types.
