Summary

The linear cutting stapler (LCS) offers an efficient, lower-cost alternative for liver resections, proving effective for transecting liver parenchyma and stapling vessels. Further research is needed for its use in major liver resections.

Background:

Liver resections carry risks of bleeding and biliary fistulas.
The Endo-GIA stapler (EG) is effective but costly.
The linear cutting stapler (LCS) presents a more affordable option.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of the linear cutting stapler (LCS) in open liver resections.
To assess LCS for transecting liver parenchyma and stapling vessels and bile ducts.

Main Methods:

Open liver resections were performed on ten patients.
LCS was used for liver parenchyma transection and en bloc stapling.
Patient conditions included benign tumors, colorectal metastases, and rare tumor metastases.

Main Results:

Average hospital stay was five days.
Two patients undergoing segment II/III resections had complications (seroma, fluid collection).
Three patients undergoing major resections experienced complications (anemia, biloma).

Conclusions:

LCS is an efficient and cost-effective stapler for hepatectomies, suitable when EG is unavailable.
LCS shaft size is advantageous for left lateral segment resections.
Further studies are required for LCS safety in large liver resections and right lobe tumor resections.
