Background:

  • Objective feedback on medical student professionalism during Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a modified Medical Students' Professionalism Assessment Scale (MSPAS).
  • To ensure the scale provides reliable and immediate feedback for history taking and physical examination OSCEs.

Main Methods:

  • Two questionnaires were developed: MSPAS-History taking (MSPAS-H) and MSPAS-Physical Examination (MSPAS-PE).
  • Content Validity Index (CVI), Cronbach's alpha for reliability, and exploratory factor analysis were used for validation.

Main Results:

  • All 12 items demonstrated a CVI above 0.85.
  • Cronbach's alpha values were 0.87 for MSPAS-H and 0.92 for MSPAS-PE, indicating good internal consistency.
  • Factor analysis confirmed item loadings of 0.5 and above.

Conclusions:

  • The modified MSPAS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing medical student professionalism in OSCEs.
  • The scale is short, simple, and can be efficiently administered with trained simulated patients.
