Mouse Models of Cancer Study02:43

Mouse Models of Cancer Study

5.6K
Mice have long served as models for studying human biology and pathology because of their phylogenetic and physiological similarity with humans. They are also easy to maintain and breed in the laboratory, and hence, many inbred strains are now available for research. Studies on mice have contributed immeasurably to our understanding of cancer biology.
The development of transgenic, knockout, and knock-in mice has led to an exponential increase in their use as model organisms in research,...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Metabolism and Growth
  • Cancer Biology
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Preclinical research on gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) requires standardized experimental designs.
  • Gonadal steroid hormones influence various physiological processes beyond neuroscience.
  • Current research practices may not adequately address the needs of transgender, nonbinary, and/or gender diverse (TNG) populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose experimental design guidelines for preclinical rodent models of GAHT.
  • To extend these guidelines to other research areas influenced by gonadal steroid hormones.
  • To advocate for equitable practices and community involvement in preclinical research.

Main Methods:

  • Perspective piece outlining suggested guidelines.
  • Discussion of translational benefits of studying exogenous steroid hormones.
  • Consideration of equitable practices for cisgender scientists.

Main Results:

  • Established guidelines for preclinical rodent models of GAHT.
  • Identified broader applicability of guidelines to metabolism, growth, cancer, and physiology.
  • Highlighted the translational potential of studying exogenous steroid hormones.

Conclusions:

  • Implementing community-informed practices in preclinical research is crucial.
  • Standardized guidelines will enhance the scientific rigor of GAHT studies.
  • Equitable engagement with cisgender scientists is necessary to support TNG healthcare globally.
