Summary

  • Two concurrent Systematic Evidence-Based Approach (SEBA) guided systematic scoping reviews (SSR) were conducted.
  • Searched multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Scopus, CINAHL) for dignity assessment tools and accounts of dignity assessments.
  • Included 22 full-text articles for dignity assessment tools and 46 for accounts of dignity assessments.

Conclusions:

  • Existing dignity assessment methods and tools do not holistically capture evolving patient self-concepts of dignity.
  • A portfolio-like appraisal is proposed for timely, longitudinal, and patient-specific dignity assessments.
  • Multidisciplinary team portfolio-based assessments can improve evaluations of changing dignity concepts while preserving holistic patient perception.
