Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between bone metabolism markers, BMD, and sarcopenia in individuals aged 60 and above.
  • To identify potential protective and risk factors for sarcopenia.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 331 patients aged ≥60 years was divided into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups.
  • Bone metabolism markers (β-CTX, N-MID, TP1NP) and BMD were assessed and compared.
  • Statistical analyses included logistic regression and correlation analyses.

Main Results:

  • The sarcopenia group exhibited higher β-CTX and N-MID levels and lower BMD T-values compared to the non-sarcopenia group.
  • Increased femoral neck BMD (FNBMD) was associated with a reduced risk of sarcopenia, while elevated β-CTX indicated higher risk.
  • FNBMD positively influenced muscle strength, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), and physical performance, whereas β-CTX negatively impacted these parameters.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated FNBMD may serve as a protective factor against sarcopenia development.
  • Increased β-CTX levels are identified as a risk factor for sarcopenia.
  • BMD and bone metabolism markers show promise for early sarcopenia screening in elderly individuals.
