Health literacy is crucial for healthcare in Ethiopia, but studies are scarce. This review synthesizes evidence, highlighting low health literacy levels and the need for context-specific interventions to improve population health.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Health Services Research
- Health Education
Background:
- Health literacy significantly impacts healthcare access and lifestyle choices, especially in low-income nations like Ethiopia.
- Ethiopia faces complex health challenges, making health literacy a critical concern.
- A significant gap exists in research on health literacy within Ethiopia.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a comprehensive synthesis of existing evidence on health literacy in Ethiopia.
- To discuss the implications of health literacy findings for healthcare practice, health promotion strategies, and future research.
- To identify the current state of health literacy research and its determinants in the Ethiopian context.
Main Methods:
- A systematic scoping review methodology was employed.
- Searches were conducted across multiple databases including PubMed, CINAHL, AJOL, and PLOS Global Public Health from May to September 2022.
- The PRISMA flow diagram and JBI methodology guidance were used for transparent reporting and data extraction.
Main Results:
- Out of 543 initially identified records, 16 studies met the eligibility criteria.
- Eligible studies, primarily from health facilities and schools, focused on health literacy levels, information sources, and determinants.
- A consistent finding was low health literacy levels, influenced by various personal and socioeconomic factors.
Conclusions:
- The review underscores the critical need for context-specific health literacy measurements and evidence-based interventions in Ethiopia.
- Prioritizing health literacy research and interventions is essential for enhancing individual and population health outcomes.
- Addressing health literacy is vital for achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to health in Ethiopia.
