    Summary

    Platelet serotonin levels were similar in schizophrenia patients and controls. However, patients taking benzodiazepines showed higher serotonin levels, suggesting a potential drug interaction.

    Background:

    • Serotonin (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter implicated in various brain functions.
    • Altered serotonin levels have been hypothesized in schizophrenia.
    • Platelet 5-HT concentration is often used as a surrogate marker for central serotonergic activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate platelet serotonin (5-HT) concentration in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls.
    • To explore potential associations between clinical features, medication, and platelet 5-HT levels in schizophrenia.

    Main Methods:

    • Blood samples were collected from control subjects, schizophrenic patients, and chronic schizophrenic patients.
