A community-based epilepsy awareness program (CBEAP) significantly improved public knowledge and attitudes toward epilepsy and patients with epilepsy. This intervention is crucial for reducing stigma and fostering better understanding in the community.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Neurology
- Social Science
Background:
- Limited interventional studies exist to improve knowledge, attitudes, and reduce stigma surrounding epilepsy.
- Epilepsy awareness programs are vital for public understanding and acceptance of individuals with epilepsy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of a community-based epilepsy awareness program (CBEAP) on knowledge, attitudes, and stigma among the Palestinian general public.
- To assess the effectiveness of an intervention designed to enhance understanding and acceptance of epilepsy.
Main Methods:
- An interventional study utilizing a pre-post design.
- Knowledge and attitudes were measured using validated questionnaires before and one month after the CBEAP.
- 150 participants completed the baseline questionnaire, with 129 completing the follow-up.
Main Results:
- The CBEAP significantly increased participants' knowledge regarding epilepsy, seizures, triggers, and treatment (p < 0.05).
- Attitudes towards epilepsy and individuals with epilepsy, including relationships and cohabitation, were significantly improved (p < 0.001).
- Younger age and having a personal connection to epilepsy predicted greater improvements in knowledge and attitude.
Conclusions:
- The CBEAP effectively enhanced public knowledge and improved attitudes towards epilepsy and patients with epilepsy.
- Widespread implementation of such interventional programs is recommended to further increase awareness and positive attitudes.
- Community-based interventions are a promising strategy for reducing epilepsy-related stigma.
