Transition metals are defined as those elements that have partially filled d orbitals. As shown in Figure 1, the d-block elements in groups 3–12 are transition elements. The f-block elements, also called inner transition metals (the lanthanides and actinides), also meet this criterion because the d orbital is partially occupied before the f orbitals.

Background:

Decades of research have advanced f-element coordination chemistry with nitrogen ligands.
F-element chemistry with heavier pnictogens (P, As, Sb, Bi) remains underdeveloped due to synthetic challenges and hard-soft acid-base mismatches.

Purpose of the Study:

To review f-element complexes featuring bonds with heavy pnictogens (P-Bi) over the last five decades.
To provide an overview of synthesis, characterization, bonding, and reactivity in this burgeoning field.
To inspire and guide future research efforts in f-element pnictogen chemistry.

Main Methods:

Focus on complexes unambiguously established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
Review of literature spanning five decades of research.
Analysis of synthetic methodologies, characterization techniques, and reactivity studies.

Main Results:

Significant progress has been made in recent years in developing f-element pnictogen chemistry.
Structurally authenticated complexes provide a foundation for understanding bonding and reactivity.
The field is expanding, with numerous opportunities for further exploration.

Conclusions:

Despite advancements, f-element chemistry with heavy pnictogens is still an emerging area with much potential.
