    Background:

    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, with varying bacterial profiles in symptomatic versus asymptomatic cases.
    • Understanding the specific bacterial characteristics associated with different UTI states is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.
    • Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a primary causative agent of UTIs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of auto-agglutinable Escherichia coli (E. coli) in patients with symptomatic UTIs compared to those with asymptomatic bacteriuria.
    • To analyze the serogroup distribution of E. coli isolates in relation to UTI symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 1000 bacterial isolates from urine samples of patients in four groups: symptomatic UTI and asymptomatic bacteriuria.
    • Testing of E. coli isolates for auto-agglutination using antisera against common urinary O-serogroups.
    • Comparison of E. coli prevalence and auto-agglutination rates between symptomatic and asymptomatic groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Auto-agglutinable E. coli strains are disproportionately found in asymptomatic bacteriuria.
    • The serotype distribution differs between E. coli causing symptomatic UTIs and those present in asymptomatic bacteriuria.
    • These findings may indicate different pathogenic potentials or host interactions for E. coli in various urinary tract conditions.
