Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted at Dr. MR Khan Shishu Hospital and ICH over six months (April-September 2021).
  • Parents of children aged 3-17 years visiting the hospital (outpatient and inpatient) were interviewed using a structured questionnaire.
  • Data on parental education, knowledge of hypertension, and perception of its occurrence in children were collected and analyzed using frequencies and percentages.

Main Results:

  • A total of 352 parents were interviewed, with a mean age of 28 ± 11 years.
  • While 89% recognized high blood pressure as hypertension and 83.5% knew it's detected by measuring blood pressure, a significant majority (83%) believed children do not develop HTN.
  • Only 17% of parents acknowledged that children can develop hypertension.

Conclusions:

  • The study reveals a substantial lack of parental awareness regarding the possibility of hypertension in children.
  • Addressing this knowledge gap through targeted health education is crucial for improving early detection and management of pediatric hypertension.
  • Enhanced parental understanding of childhood HTN is vital for timely diagnosis and effective treatment, ultimately improving long-term health outcomes.
