Background:

  • Self-assessment examinations (SAEs) are crucial for evaluating trainee progress in electrodiagnostic (EDx) medicine.
  • SAEs also offer insights into how training program factors influence examination performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between the duration of EDx medicine training, the volume of EDx studies performed, and performance on the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) SAE.
  • To determine if training duration and study volume are independent predictors of SAE performance.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of the 2023 AANEM-SAE results from 756 participants.
  • Correlational analysis of examination scores with months of training and number of EDx studies.
  • Multivariate linear regression to assess the independent impact of training variables on scores.

Main Results:

  • Examination scores showed moderate positive correlations with both months of training (r=0.5) and number of EDx studies (r=0.55).
  • Performance improved with training duration but plateaued after 300-400 EDx studies.

Conclusions:

  • Extended training duration in EDx medicine is associated with improved performance on the AANEM SAE.
  • The most significant gains in examination performance appear to occur within the first 300-400 supervised EDx studies.
