Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, affecting three out of four individuals. Both increasing age and greater disability are linked to a higher frequency and severity of these sleep issues in MS.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Sleep Medicine
- Clinical Research
Background:
- Sleep disturbances are a common but often overlooked issue in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
- Understanding the factors contributing to sleep problems in MS is crucial for improving patient quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the prevalence of sleep disturbances in patients with MS.
- To investigate the relationship between sleep disturbances and clinical (e.g., disability, MS form) and demographic (e.g., age) variables in MS patients.
Main Methods:
- The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was administered to 221 patients with MS.
- Usable data from 142 patients were collected and analyzed to identify sleep disorders and associated factors.
Main Results:
- A high prevalence of sleep disturbances was found in 74.7% of MS patients, exceeding rates in the general population.
- Sleep disorder frequency and severity increased with age and the degree of disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale scores).
- Patients with secondary progressive MS reported more sleep disturbances than those with primary progressive MS.
Conclusions:
- Sleep disorders are significantly more common in patients with MS compared to other populations.
- Age and disability severity are positively correlated with the prevalence and severity of sleep disturbances in MS.
- Targeted interventions for sleep disturbances may be beneficial for MS patients, particularly those with progressive forms, advanced age, or higher disability.
