This study investigates a new prevention program combining motivational interviewing, mindfulness meditation, and implementation intentions to reduce binge drinking among university students. The findings aim to inform effective strategies for addressing problematic alcohol consumption in young adults.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Psychology
- Intervention Science
Background:
- Problematic alcohol consumption, particularly binge drinking (BD), is a growing concern among young people.
- New prevention strategies are needed to address evolving consumption patterns in student populations.
- The ADUC project and ALCOMEDIIT study investigate impulsivity as a determinant of BD in university students.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess a novel prevention program for reducing BD practices in a student environment.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of combining motivational interviewing (MI) with mindfulness meditation (MBM) and implementation intentions (II).
- To develop targeted prevention tools for alcohol use and BD in university students.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 170 university student alcohol users with a history of BD.
- Participants were assigned to a control group (MI) or an experimental group (MI + MBM + II).
- Follow-up assessments at 1 and 6 months to measure BD reduction.
Main Results:
- The study aims to measure the effectiveness of the prevention program in decreasing BD.
- Exploratory follow-up at 6 months will provide longer-term insights.
- Results will inform the optimization of self-regulation strategies within prevention programs.
Conclusions:
- The study evaluates the potential of integrating MBM and II with MI for an innovative BD prevention program.
- The research seeks to reduce alcohol use and BD prevalence in the student population.
- Findings will contribute to evidence-based interventions for young adult alcohol consumption.
