Summary

This case series suggests halofuginone lactate overdose can cause abomasitis in calves. Recovery was observed after discontinuing the drug and providing supportive care.

Background:

  • Halofuginone lactate is a coccidiostat used in livestock.
  • Abomasitis is inflammation of the abomasum, a key digestive organ in ruminants.

Observation:

  • Seven Belgian Blue calves presented with anorexia and weight loss.
  • Ultrasonography revealed thickened, edematous abomasal walls, indicative of abomasitis.
  • Necropsy confirmed abomasitis in three of the affected calves.

Findings:

  • Retrospective analysis identified halofuginone lactate overdose (348-421 µg/kg/day) as the likely cause.
  • Four calves recovered after halofuginone lactate withdrawal and treatment for secondary conditions like pneumonia and diarrhea.
  • This study is the first to report a link between halofuginone lactate and abomasitis.

Implications:

  • Halofuginone lactate overdose should be considered in cases of unexplained abomasitis in calves.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of halofuginone-induced abomasitis.
  • This highlights the importance of accurate drug dosing in animal health.
