The ReX platform improves medication adherence and clinical outcomes for cystic fibrosis patients using CFTR modulators. This safe and user-friendly system enhances treatment management and may reduce healthcare costs.
Area of Science:
- Medical Technology
- Patient Engagement
- Chronic Disease Management
Background:
- Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a complex, multi-system disease requiring intensive daily treatment.
- Sub-optimal adherence to CF therapies significantly impacts clinical and economic burden.
- Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator modulators (CFTRm) are high-cost, effective medications for CF.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the safety, usability, and efficacy of the ReX platform for medication management of CFTR modulators in people with CF (pwCF).
Main Methods:
- Prospective, multi-center, open study involving pwCF (age > 12) prescribed CFTRm (ETI or TI).
- ReX platform used for medication dispensing, reminders, and adherence data collection.
- Study duration 12-24 months, including clinical visits with physical exams, BMI, pulmonary function tests, and user experience questionnaires.
Main Results:
- Median adherence to CFTRm was 97.5% (year 1) and 94% (year 2), exceeding the reported ~80% adherence.
- No adverse events related to the ReX platform were reported; patients found it valuable and user-friendly.
- Significant improvements observed: mean FEV1% increased from 74.4% to 80.8% (p=0.004), and BMI percentile increased from 53.5 to 59.0 (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
- The ReX platform is a safe, user-friendly, and effective tool for managing CFTRm in pwCF.
- The platform demonstrates potential to improve treatment adherence and clinical outcomes.
- Further large-scale, long-term studies are warranted to confirm clinical benefits and cost-effectiveness.
