Background:

  • News broadcasts are known to induce psychological stress.
  • Bob Ross (BR) is widely perceived as a soothing and relaxing cultural figure.
  • The psychological and physiological benefits of BR exposure remain under-researched.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of watching BR versus news on mood and cardiovascular health.
  • To test if BR exposure increases Profile of Mood States (POMS) scores and heart rate variability (HRV).
  • To test if news exposure increases blood pressure (BP), vascular stiffness (VS), and heart rate (HR).

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, controlled, crossover study involving 18 healthy young adults.
  • Participants were assessed for BP, VS, HR, HRV, and POMS before and after viewing BR or news.
  • Exposure duration was matched at approximately 27 minutes for both conditions.

Main Results:

  • Watching BR significantly reduced POMS scores across anxiety, anger, depression, fatigue, and confusion domains.
  • The LF/HF ratio, an HRV marker, was significantly lower after watching BR, indicating reduced sympathovagal imbalance.
  • No significant effects were observed on systolic BP, mean arterial pressure, or diastolic BP.

Conclusions:

  • The "Bob Ross Effect" demonstrates a capacity to mitigate overall mood disturbance.
  • Acute exposure to BR appears to have minimal influence on cardiovascular system markers.
  • Further research may explore longer-term or different exposure paradigms for cardiovascular effects.
