    Summary

    Follow-up care in specialized geriatrics clinics did not improve outcomes for elderly patients compared to general medical clinics. Initial geriatric evaluation unit (GEU) assessment appears more beneficial than ongoing interdisciplinary team care.

    Background:

    • Outpatient geriatric evaluation units (GEUs) provide comprehensive initial assessments.
    • The long-term benefits of specialized interdisciplinary team follow-up care versus general medical care are not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effectiveness of follow-up care in a geriatrics clinic with an interdisciplinary team versus a general medical clinic for elderly patients previously evaluated in a GEU.

    Main Methods:

    • Randomized controlled trial involving 26 matched pairs of elderly male patients.
    • Patients were assigned to either a geriatrics clinic (interdisciplinary team) or a general medical clinic (no interdisciplinary team).
    • Outcomes assessed at 12 months included cognitive, affective, and functional status, hospitalization, community placement, service use, and mortality.
