Statins may help prevent and treat Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), a complication of Graves' disease (GD). This review found evidence suggesting statin use can delay TED onset and improve treatment response.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Endocrinology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is a significant extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease (GD). Current treatments for TED have limitations and do not fully prevent long-term complications.
- The need for effective preventative and therapeutic strategies for TED is critical due to the shortcomings of existing treatments.
Conclusions:
- Statin therapy shows promise as an adjunctive treatment for preventing and managing Thyroid Eye Disease (TED).
- Further research may solidify the role of statins in the multimodal management of TED.
