Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT

241
Radiological investigations, including X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, are critical for diagnosing and evaluating various medical conditions. These imaging techniques provide valuable insights into the body's internal structures, aiding in the detection of abnormalities, assessment of disease progression, and development of treatment strategies. This article delves into two primary radiological investigations, chest X-rays and CT scans, outlining their purpose, procedures, and...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

93
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Area of Science:

  • Radiological Physics
  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiation Protection

Background:

  • Increasing mammogram volumes necessitate dose optimization.
  • Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) are crucial for quality assurance in mammography.
  • Establishing local DRLs ensures patient safety and effective radiation management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine local DRLs for mammography in Dubai.
  • To analyze DRLs based on varying breast thicknesses.
  • To compare local DRLs with international benchmarks.

Main Methods:

  • Retrieved 2599 anonymized mammograms for analysis.
  • Included screening mammograms for women aged 40-69.
  • Excluded cases with breast implants or thickness outside 20-100 mm.
  • Calculated mean, median, and 75th percentile for Mean Glandular Dose (MGD).

Main Results:

  • Local DRLs for craniocaudal (CC) projection: 0.80-0.82 mGy.
  • Local DRLs for mediolateral oblique (MLO) projection: 0.89-0.97 mGy.
  • Mean Glandular Dose (MGD) values were higher in MLO views than CC views.
  • Proposed local DRLs for breast thicknesses from 20 to 100 mm.

Conclusions:

  • Established local DRLs for mammography in Dubai.
  • Local DRLs are below International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommendations (3 mGy/view).
  • Findings support effective radiation dose monitoring and optimization in mammography services.
