    Summary

    Fluid retention in burn patients, measured per square meter of body surface area, accurately predicts survival. This method, adjusted for burn wound fluid loss, is as effective as using lean body mass for assessing outcomes.

    Background:

    • Previous research linked fluid retention (cc/kg lean body mass) to burn survival.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate fluid retention per square meter of body surface area (BSA).
    • To adjust fluid retention calculations for estimated fluid loss from burn wounds.
    • To compare the predictive accuracy of BSA-based fluid retention versus lean body mass-based retention for survival.

    Main Methods:

    • Data from 95 adult burn patients (≥20% BSA burn) were analyzed.
    • Fluid retention in the first 48 hours postburn was calculated.
