Pro-inflammatory cytokines in spondyloarthritis: a case-control study

Interleukin-17 (IL-17) and IL-23 show promise in distinguishing spondyloarthritis patients from healthy individuals. Elevated levels of these pro-inflammatory cytokines, along with TNFα, are associated with disease characteristics.

- TNFα levels correlated with disease activity (BASDAI) and structural damage (BASRI).
- Disease activity was linked to longer disease duration and higher IL-6 levels, while structural damage was associated with male gender, longer disease duration, and high disease activity.
Conclusions:
- IL-17 exhibits the highest discriminative ability between SpA patients and healthy individuals.
- These findings suggest IL-17 may serve as a valuable biomarker for the diagnosis of spondyloarthritis.
