Summary

Captive tigers paced more when they could see, but not interact with, other tigers. Limiting visual contact between neighboring tigers reduced this abnormal repetitive behavior, improving welfare.

Background:

  • Abnormal repetitive behaviors (ARBs), such as pacing, are common in captive large felines.
  • Visual contact with conspecifics without social interaction can exacerbate ARBs, indicating a welfare concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of conspecific visual contact on pacing behavior in Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae).
  • To determine if limiting visual contact can mitigate pacing in captive tigers.

Main Methods:

  • A barrier experiment was conducted on a pair of Sumatran tigers at Rotterdam Zoo.
  • Four housing treatments were applied: same enclosure, separate with visual contact, separate without visual contact, and back to the same enclosure.
