    • Evidence for a visual cortico-striato-nigral pathway to both the pars reticulata and pars compacta in rats was established.
    • The major projection to the ventral pars reticulata may influence nigrotectal neurons.
    • This pathway potentially forms an indirect visual corticotectal connection mediated by the basal ganglia.
