    Summary

Incidental meningiomas, benign brain tumors found unexpectedly, increase with age, particularly in those over 80. This autopsy study found a 1:3 male to female ratio and larger tumors in older individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuropathology
    • Geriatric Medicine
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Incidental meningiomas are frequently discovered during autopsies.
    • Understanding their prevalence and characteristics is crucial for geriatric and neurosurgical care.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the prevalence, demographics, and characteristics of incidental meningiomas.
    • To investigate the relationship between age and meningioma size and occurrence.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 231 autopsy cases with incidental meningiomas.
    • Data collected from Montefiore Medical Center between 1950 and 1982.
    • Analysis of tumor prevalence, size, and patient demographics (age, sex).

    Main Results:

    • Prevalence of incidental meningiomas increased with age, peaking in individuals 80 years and older.
    • A male to female ratio of 1:3 was observed.
    • Tumor size also showed a positive correlation with age.
    • Multiple meningiomas occurred in 8.2% of cases, without neurofibromatosis stigmata.

    Conclusions:

    • Age is a significant factor in the prevalence and size of incidental meningiomas.
    • Findings highlight the importance of considering age-related changes in meningioma occurrence.
    • The study provides valuable epidemiological data on incidental meningiomas in an elderly population.
