Design Example: Resistive Touchscreen

314
A device engineer plays a crucial role in designing user interfaces for mobile devices. One such interface is the resistive touchscreen, which fundamentally consists of two metallic layers: a flexible upper layer and a rigid lower layer, separated by a narrow gap. The high resistance between these two layers is a key characteristic of this design.
When a user touches the screen, the two layers make contact at a specific point known as the touchpoint. This contact reduces the resistance between...

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

657
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Area of Science:

  • Educational Technology
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Virtual Reality

Background:

  • Panoramic video and virtual reality (VR) offer immersive learning experiences.
  • Research on panoramic virtual learning environment (PVLE) screen design elements is limited.
  • Understanding learner guidance within PVLEs is crucial for effective design.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how learners are guided by panoramic video elements in a PVLE.
  • To compare the effects of different narration (live vs. AI) and caption (none, 120-degree, static follow) methods on learner experience.
  • To provide evidence-based design rules for optimizing PVLE screens.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental study with 90 participants randomly assigned to six conditions.
  • Utilized eye-tracking technology to monitor learner attention.
  • Manipulated narration type (live interpretation vs. AI interpretation) and caption presentation (no caption, 120-degree caption, static follow caption).

Main Results:

  • Live interpretation significantly improved learner attention, emotion, and experience compared to AI interpretation.
  • Caption presentation order of effectiveness: no caption > 120-degree caption > static follow caption.
  • Caption presentation significantly influenced learner attention, emotions, and experiences.

Conclusions:

  • Live interpretation is superior to AI interpretation for enhancing engagement in PVLEs.
  • The absence of captions or simpler caption formats are more effective for attention and experience in PVLEs.
  • Findings offer guidelines for designing effective panoramic video teaching resources and optimizing PVLE screen design.
