Metacognition01:26

Metacognition

159
Metacognition is a conscious process where individuals are aware of their cognitive and executive processes, such as planning before solving a problem or self-monitoring during reading. For instance, a writer may need help with composing a piece. The situation involves a writer who is working on a piece of writing, but while doing so, they realize that something is missing. They notice that their characters lack depth or details. This realization occurs because the writer is reflecting on their...

Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy01:05

Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy

5.8K
Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy or TIRF is an advanced microscopic technique used to visualize fluorophores in samples close to a solid surface with a higher refractive index, such as a glass coverslip. TIRF only allows fluorophores in proximity to the solid surface to be excited. When light from a medium with a lower refractive index (such as air) hits the glass coverslip at a critical angle, the light undergoes total internal reflection stead of passing through the glass.

Critical Thinking01:19

Critical Thinking

104
Critical thinking involves reflective and productive thinking and the evaluation of evidence. Critical thinkers seek to understand the deeper meaning of ideas, question assumptions, and make independent decisions about what to believe or do. Scientists, for instance, are often critical thinkers. Critical thinking also requires humility about what we know and don't know and the motivation to look beyond the obvious. It is essential for effective problem-solving.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Higher Education Studies

Background:

  • Postgraduate study presents unique mental, physical, and emotional challenges.
  • Postgraduate students exhibit higher rates of anxiety and depression compared to the general population.
  • Marginalized students (gender, race, sexuality, disability, first-generation, international) often experience heightened isolation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement and evaluate a reflective practice program for postgraduate students.
  • To enhance support systems within a Doctoral Training Partnership.
  • To equip students with skills for navigating professional challenges and improving work-life balance.

Main Methods:

  • Development and implementation of a reflective practice program.
  • Focus on navigating work environments and professional relationships.
  • Emphasis on improving work-life balance and tailored student support.

Main Results:

  • Reflective practice aids students in managing challenging work environments and relationships.
  • The program facilitates improved work-life balance for postgraduate students.
  • Institutions can tailor support more effectively through this reflective approach.

Conclusions:

  • Reflective practice is a valuable tool for supporting postgraduate student well-being.
  • This program enhances the Doctoral Training Partnership's ability to support future bioscientists.
  • Proactive institutional support is crucial for addressing postgraduate mental health challenges.
