Single port robot-assisted surgery for prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia shows comparable oncological and functional outcomes to traditional methods. Shorter hospital stays were noted for single port approaches, particularly in simple prostatectomy procedures.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Surgical Oncology
- Robotic Surgery
Background:
- Review of current evidence on single port robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (SP-RARP) and SP robot-assisted simple prostatectomy (SP-RASP).
- Assessment of perioperative, oncological, and functional outcomes for these minimally invasive techniques.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and meta-analyze evidence comparing SP-RARP with multi-port RARP (MP-RARP).
- To evaluate outcomes of SP-RASP compared to other surgical techniques for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive bibliographic search of multiple databases conducted in July 2023.
- Inclusion of prospective and retrospective studies assessing SP-RARP or SP-RASP.
- Meta-analysis performed on comparative studies between SP-RARP and MP-RARP.
Main Results:
- 21 studies with 1400 patients reviewed; 18 on SP-RARP, 3 on SP-RASP.
- SP-RARP demonstrated similar outcomes to MP-RARP in most perioperative, oncological, and functional parameters.
- SP-RASP showed shorter hospital stay and lower incontinence rates compared to other techniques.
Conclusions:
- Single port (SP) robotic surgery achieves comparable oncological, functional, and perioperative outcomes.
- Different SP approaches did not reveal significant outcome variations.
- Limitations include retrospective study designs, limited follow-up, and small sample sizes.
