Background:

  • Health literacy (HL) is vital for health management and is linked to poorer outcomes in chronic diseases.
  • Inadequate HL is associated with worse diabetes control and increased hospitalizations.
  • The relationship between HL and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between health literacy and the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in individuals with T2DM.
  • To determine if inadequate glycemic control mediates the relationship between HL and DR.
  • To explore the influence of HL on DR risk, independent of clinical factors.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 288 participants with T2DM from the 'Brazilian Diabetes Study' cohort.
  • Inclusion criteria: T2DM diagnosis, age 40-70 years, ability to read and write.
  • Analysis adjusted for HbA1c, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels.

Main Results:

  • DR prevalence was 16.5% in the adequate HL group and 32.8% in the inadequate HL group (P=0.0081).
  • Individuals with inadequate HL exhibited a higher risk of DR.
