    Background:

    • Understanding the stability of sodium nitroprusside under light is essential for safe administration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the in vitro release of cyanide from sodium nitroprusside solutions exposed to fluorescent light.
    • To determine the stability of sodium nitroprusside solutions protected from light.
    • To assess the impact of light exposure duration on cyanide release.

    Main Methods:

    • Sodium nitroprusside solutions in 5% dextrose in water were exposed to fluorescent light (500 ft candles) or protected from light.
    • Cyanide concentrations were measured using a cyanide-specific ion electrode at various time points (4, 8, 24, 48, and 72 hours).
    • Light-protected solutions included those exposed to light but shielded and those stored in a dark room.

    Main Results:

    • Cyanide concentrations significantly increased in light-exposed solutions starting at 24 hours, reaching 100% release by 72 hours.

    Conclusions:

    • Sodium nitroprusside solutions are safe for up to 24 hours if properly protected from light.
    • Light exposure accelerates cyanide release from sodium nitroprusside solutions.
    • Adsorption of released cyanide to polyvinylchloride surfaces was also observed.
