    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Allergology
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition.
    • Contact dermatitis can be triggered by various environmental allergens.
    • Compositae family plants are known sources of allergenic oleoresins.

    Observation:

    • A 9-year-old boy with a history of atopy presented with a seasonal dermatitis.
    • The eruption was morphologically similar to atopic dermatitis but prominent on the face and palms.
    • Skin lesions improved significantly upon avoidance of contact with specific plants.

    Findings:

    • Patch testing revealed positive reactions to multiple Compositae plants, including dandelion, ragweed, sagebrush, yarrow, and tansy.
    • Negative patch tests were observed for other plant families, ruling out broader plant allergies.
    • The patient's dermatitis exhibited seasonal exacerbation, worsening in summer months.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights Compositae oleoresins as a significant cause of allergic contact dermatitis in atopic individuals.
    • Accurate plant identification and patch testing are crucial for diagnosing plant-induced contact dermatitis.
    • Understanding seasonal patterns and plant exposure can aid in managing allergic contact dermatitis.
