Summary

A child initially appearing to have hypertensive encephalopathy was treated successfully with antihypertensives. Further tests revealed the underlying cause was Haemophilus meningitis, a serious bacterial infection.

A 21-month-old female presented with symptoms suggestive of hypertensive encephalopathy.
The patient's encephalopathy symptoms improved significantly after receiving antihypertensive therapy.

Findings:

Subsequent investigations confirmed the diagnosis of Haemophilus meningitis.
Haemophilus meningitis can present with symptoms mimicking other neurological conditions.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of considering infectious etiologies in pediatric hypertensive encephalopathy presentations.
Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to guide appropriate treatment and prevent severe complications associated with meningitis.
