Cancer Stem Cells and Tumor Maintenance02:40

Cancer Stem Cells and Tumor Maintenance

4.9K
Early diagnosis and treatment can often cure cancer. However, even with treatment, residual cells called cancer stem cells (CSC) might remain, often causing tumor recurrence. These cancer stem cells possess the potential for self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation and are often responsible for the therapeutic resistance displayed in most cancers.
Cancer stem cells are thought to originate from tissue-specific normal stem cells or progenitor cells. The normal stem cells usually reside in...

Summary

Brain enriched myelin associated protein 1 (BCAS1) marks immature oligodendrocytes, potentially originating diffuse gliomas. BCAS1+ stellate cells proliferate in oligodendrogliomas, suggesting BCAS1 as a key marker for tumor malignancy.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Cellular biology
  • Tumorigenesis

Background:

  • Immature oligodendrocytes are implicated in diffuse glioma development.
  • Brain enriched myelin associated protein 1 (BCAS1) is a novel marker for immature oligodendrocytes.
  • BCAS1's role in diffuse gliomas remains largely uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze BCAS1 expression in diffuse gliomas.
  • To characterize the molecular and ultrastructural features of BCAS1-expressing cells.
  • To investigate the potential role of BCAS1 in glioma tumorigenesis.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy were used to analyze BCAS1 expression and cell morphology.
  • Tumor samples from patients with oligodendrogliomas, astrocytomas, and glioblastomas were studied.
  • Proliferative capacity of BCAS1-positive cells was assessed.

Main Results:

  • BCAS1-positive cells exhibited stellate or spherical morphologies.
  • Both cell types were found isolated in all gliomas studied.
  • Proliferative BCAS1-positive stellate cells formed nodules, particularly in oligodendrogliomas.

Conclusions:

  • BCAS1-positive cells, especially stellate forms, show proliferative potential in diffuse gliomas.
  • The distribution and proliferation of BCAS1-positive stellate cells in oligodendrogliomas warrant further investigation.
  • BCAS1 represents a promising marker for understanding diffuse glioma malignancy.
