A Dutch man with persistent respiratory symptoms after traveling to California was diagnosed with Coccidioides infection. Antifungal treatment with fluconazole successfully cleared the fungal infection, resolving his symptoms.
Area of Science:
- Medical Mycology
- Infectious Diseases
- Pulmonology
Background:
- Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection endemic to the southwestern United States, but can occur in travelers returning from endemic areas.
- Respiratory symptoms like cough and shortness of breath can be indicative of invasive fungal infections.
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) shares some clinical and radiological features with other pulmonary fungal infections.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis I
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.
