Targets for Drug Action: Overview01:26

Targets for Drug Action: Overview

6.3K
Drugs target macromolecules to modify ongoing cellular processes. Primary drug targets include receptors, ion channels, transporters, and enzymes.
Receptors are either membrane-spanning or intracellular proteins, which upon binding a ligand, get activated and transmit the signal downstream to elicit a response. Drugs bind receptors, either mimicking the action of endogenous ligands or blocking the receptor activity to bring about a modified response. Nearly 35% of approved drugs target the G...

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors and Calcium Channel Blockers

167
Receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are two critical categories of drugs employed in the treatment of pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). PAH is a disease that causes high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, resulting in chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
TKIs, such as imatinib (Gleevec), are particularly effective in tackling the growth and mitogenic factors that become upregulated in PAH patients. These factors contribute to the...

Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

7.6K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Drug Dosage Regimen: Overview01:15

Drug Dosage Regimen: Overview

3.5K
A drug dosage regimen describes the specific instructions and schedule for administering a drug to a patient. It considers factors such as drug dosage, frequency, route of administration, and duration of treatment. Designing an appropriate dosage regimen for a patient aims to achieve a target drug concentration at the site of action.
Typically, the starting dose and dosing interval are guided by the manufacturer's recommendations based on clinical trials conducted during and after drug...

Peptic Ulcer Disease IV: Management

93
Medical treatment strategies for peptic ulcers encompass various methods. The primary goal of treatment is to diminish gastric acidity and strengthen mucosal defense mechanisms.
The therapeutic approach involves ensuring adequate rest, implementing drug therapy, promoting smoking cessation, making dietary modifications, and emphasizing long-term follow-up care.
Pharmacological management
The prevailing therapy for peptic ulcers involves a combination of managing the patient's current...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Patient Education
  • Gout Management

Background:

  • Gout management guidelines recommend a treat-to-target serum uric acid approach.
  • Patient confusion exists regarding initiation and dose escalation of urate-lowering therapy (ULT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a Gout Treat-To-Target booklet for patient education.
  • To improve patient understanding of ULT initiation and dose escalation.

Main Methods:

  • A booklet was developed by a team of three consultant rheumatologists.
  • Content validation involved eleven physicians; face validation involved ten gout patients.

Main Results:

  • Item-Content Validity Index (I-CVI) ranged from 0.9 to 1 for relevancy, clarity, ambiguity, and simplicity.
  • Item-Face Validity Index (I-FVI) was 1, indicating 100% patient agreement.
  • Uricosuric agent side effects were added based on evaluator feedback.

Conclusions:

  • A Gout Treat-to-Target booklet was successfully developed and validated.
  • High agreement was observed in I-FVI and I-CVI among physicians and patients.
  • The booklet serves as an effective tool for patient education in gout management.
