Summary

A novel smartphone-based otoacoustic emission (OAE) device shows comparable performance to a commercial device for newborn hearing screening (NHS). This mHealth technology offers potential for wider access to hearing loss identification, especially in underserved areas.

Background:

  • Smartphone applications (apps) are increasingly used for identifying hearing loss.
  • Smartphone-based apps for newborn hearing screening (NHS) are proposed as an alternative screening method.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the screening outcomes of a smartphone-based otoacoustic emission (OAE) device with a commercially available OAE screening device.
  • To evaluate the performance of a novel mHealth device for newborn hearing screening.

Main Methods:

  • Newborn hearing screening (NHS) conducted in maternity wards and NICUs of two tertiary hospitals over 8 months.
  • Compared smartphone-based hearOAE device outcomes (DPOAE and TEOAE) against the Otodynamics ILO V6 device within participants.
  • Analyzed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise levels, and pass/refer rates.

Main Results:

  • The hearOAE device demonstrated higher TEOAE SNR and lower mean/total noise levels compared to the Otodynamics device.
  • No significant difference in DPOAE refer rates between devices; hearOAE showed a higher TEOAE pass rate.
  • High within-participant concordance of NHS outcomes: 89.7% for DPOAE and 85.0% for TEOAE.

Conclusions:

  • The mHealth-based OAE device showed good agreement with a commercial device for NHS.
  • The study verifies the performance of the novel smartphone-based OAE device.
  • This technology may enhance accessibility of decentralized NHS services in resource-limited settings.
