Summary

Young adults typically do not exhibit hyper-binding, which is the incorrect memory encoding of target and distractor information. However, individuals with poor attentional control show increased hyper-binding, regardless of age.

Background:

  • Hyper-binding, the erroneous encoding of target and distractor information into memory, is often considered an age-related effect linked to declining attentional control.
  • Previous research suggests young adults generally do not exhibit hyper-binding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether young adults with diminished attentional control exhibit hyper-binding, testing the hypothesis that reduced attentional control, not age itself, underlies this memory phenomenon.
  • To explore the relationship between individual differences in attentional control and hyper-binding tendencies in a young adult population.

Main Methods:

  • An individual differences approach was employed with 121 participants.
  • Participants completed an implicit associative memory test to measure hyper-binding (target-distractor pairs) and target-target pairs.
  • A battery of attentional control tasks assessed individual differences in attention regulation.

Main Results:

  • On average, young adults did not show significant hyper-binding.
  • Participants with poorer attentional control demonstrated a greater hyper-binding effect compared to those with better attentional control.
  • Exploratory findings indicated that individual differences in attentional control correlate with susceptibility to retrieval interference.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the hypothesis that age-related hyper-binding in older adults stems from declines in attentional control.
  • Hyper-binding is not exclusive to older adults and can affect any individual with deficits in attentional control, irrespective of age.
  • Attentional control is a critical factor influencing the propensity for hyper-binding.
