Background:

  • Perioperative inflammation and nutritional status significantly influence cancer outcomes.
  • The C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a potential indicator of these factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical impact of the CALLY index on oncological outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer undergoing curative treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 180 patients with esophageal cancer treated curatively between 2005 and 2020 was analyzed.
  • Prognosis and clinicopathological parameters were compared between high and low CALLY index groups.

Main Results:

  • Patients with a high CALLY index showed significantly better 3- and 5-year overall survival rates (75.9% and 66.6%) compared to those with a low CALLY index (50.0% and 42.6%).
  • The CALLY index was identified as an independent prognostic factor (HR=2.310, p<0.001).
  • A lower incidence of anastomotic leakage was observed in the high CALLY index group (27.5%) versus the low CALLY index group (40.2%, p=0.030).

Conclusions:

  • The pretreatment CALLY index is an independent prognostic factor for esophageal cancer.
  • The CALLY index shows promise as a biomarker for treatment and management strategies in esophageal cancer.
