Microsatellite instability (MSI) status influences how inflammatory markers affect cancer patient survival. Inflammation markers like NLR and PLR impacted survival in microsatellite stable tumors but not MSI-high tumors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between MSI status and various inflammatory indicators in cancer patients.
  • To determine if inflammatory markers predict survival outcomes differently based on MSI status.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 204 cancer patients was analyzed, divided equally into MSI-high (MSI-H) and microsatellite stable (MSS) groups.
  • Evaluated inflammatory markers included Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte Ratio (LMR), C-reactive protein (CRP)-to-albumin ratio, and Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII).
  • Survival analysis was performed using univariate and multivariate models.

Main Results:

  • In MSS patients, elevated NLR, PLR, and SII, along with a low LMR (≤2.6), were associated with worse survival in univariate analysis.
  • Low LMR (≤2.6) was an independent negative prognostic factor for survival in MSS patients via multivariate analysis.
  • These inflammatory indicators did not significantly impact survival outcomes in MSI-H patients.

Conclusions:

  • The prognostic significance of inflammation-based scores in cancer is dependent on MSI status.
  • Chronic inflammation's impact on survival differs between MSI-H and MSS tumors.
  • Further research is warranted to explore targeted therapeutic strategies based on MSI status and inflammatory profiles.
