Summary

Children using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology, including eye-gaze computer technology (EGCT), continue its use into school age, enhancing communication and participation. However, full potential for leisure and environmental control remains limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To follow preschool explorers of EGCT into school age.
  • To describe children's technology use and parent perceptions.
  • To assess the utility of AAC for communication, participation, and leisure.

Main Methods:

  • Descriptive study design.
  • Ten parents completed online and phone surveys.
  • Data collected on nine children's AAC use and parent-reported support.

Main Results:

  • All children continued using AAC in school; most used it at home.
  • Many maintained use of EGCT explored in preschool.
  • Parents reported sufficient support and perceived enhanced communication, but limited leisure/environmental control.

Conclusions:

  • Computer-based AAC is powerful for school-aged children's communication and participation.
  • Current use may not maximize children's agency for leisure or environmental control.
  • Further research and support are needed to optimize AAC device capabilities for diverse needs.
